For perspective, the United Way has 91%, Girl Scouts have 91%, Doctors Without Boarders 91%, Make a Wish has 79%, Children’s Miracle Network has 85%, and March of Dimes has 71%. Charity Navigator itself has a 92% rating.
It’s taken us years to even get on the list (they were only doing million-dollar charities). CDH International is the first, and only, Charity Navigator ranked Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia charity.

CDH International Earns a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
Wake Forest, NC, November 21, 2022 – CDH International is proud to announce that its strong financial health and ongoing accountability and transparency has earned a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. This rating designates CDH International as an official “Give with Confidence” charity, indicating that our organization is using its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator’s criteria. Charity Navigator is America’s largest and most-utilized independent charity evaluator. Since 2001, the organization has been an unbiased and trusted source of information for more than 11 million donors annually.
Charity Navigator analyzes nonprofit performance based on four key indicators, referred to as beacons. Currently, nonprofits can earn scores for the Impact & Results, Accountability & Finance, Culture & Community, and Leadership & Adaptability beacons.

The charity runs a global patient research registry, working with universities and research to help find the cause, prevention, and best treatments for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, educating and supporting patient families, and running the annual worldwide Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Day campaign on April 19th.
Founded in 1995 by two mothers of children lost to the congenital anomaly, CDH International is the world’s oldest, largest, and leading Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia charity, supporting 1000’s of patient families in 84 countries on a shocking $250,000 annual budget globally.
“52,000 babies are born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia every year. Our charity supports these very critically ill newborns in every possible way that we can on less than $5 per child. Ireland lost her only child, Shane, to Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia in 1999 at six years old.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s diaphragm (a thin sheet of muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest) fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and prevent lung growth.
CDH occurs in approximately 1 in 2500 births, with over 1600 babies diagnosed each year in the United States alone. There is currently no known cause, but studies have suggested that it is likely due to a number of genetic and environmental factors.
