April 6, 2024 – Betanzos, Spain
On the sixth day, she rested. And did laundry.
I pushed myself too far yesterday. 22 miles was too much for me.
Everything hurts!
So I sat in my room with my feet up and the laptop on my lap, doing computer work for the charity.
Instead of a long post about aches, pains and computer work, please allow me to introduce you to the charity and the children that I love and am walking for, and show you the village I’m resting in.
Congenital Diaphragmatic HerniaCongenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a congenital anomaly that occurs when a baby’s diaphragm fails to form fully, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and prevent lung growth.
1 in every 2500 babies is born with CDH. The cause is unknown.
Babies born with CDH undergo complicated surgeries and long hospital stays. In Higher-Income-Countries, the survival rate is approximately 50 to 80%. In Lower-to-Middle-Income-Countries, the survival rate is less than 1%.
CDH International was founded to help find the cause, prevention and best treatments of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia while raising awareness and supporting patient families.
I founded CDH International (then CHERUBS) in 1995 with Rhonda Montague. Her son, Preston, and my son, Shane, were both born with CDH and were roommate in the PICU in 1993. The only support that we had in dealing with CDH was each other. Neither of us knew anything about the birth defect. There was no support group, no pamphlets, nothing.
So we created them.
Now, almost 30 years, we have helped 1000’s of families in 84 countries. We have a great team of wonderful people on our Boards and all the committees helping to run the world’s largest CDH charity.
