Headline: Comics shop raises $1,900 for Wake Forest charity
Alt head: Play4Life Comics holds first charity auction for CDH International
An auction of collectible comic books has raised over $1,900 for children’s charity CDH International May 8.
The online auction was hosted by Play4Life Comics in Wake Forest, N.C. and included comic books donated by the shop’s local community, as well as online collectors from across the country and Canada. Included were graded and ungraded comics such as a 9.8 Venom Lethal Protector #1, Thor #1 (featuring the first Jane Foster as Thor), a 9.8 Mighty Thor #705 (Art Germ variant), G.I. Joe #21 (the Snake-Eyes “silent issue”), and others.
The total raised was $1,932. It was the first charity auction conducted by Play4Life Comics, which has a physical presence in downtown Wake Forest, but conducts online-only auctions several times a week on Facebook Live and YouTube.
“We believe it’s our responsibility to give back where we can,” said Brandon Wright, owner of Play4Life Comics. “CDH International being a local charity seemed to be the perfect fit for us to do that.”
The headquarters for CDH International is also located in Wake Forest. CDH is a global initiative to stop congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and prevent lung growth. CDH occurs in approximately 1 in 2,500 births, with more than 1,600 babies diagnosed each year in the U.S. alone. For more information, see cdhi.org
